Sunday Funnies: The Daily Comics Weigh In

It was no coincidence that on April 5, 1993, characters in many of the nation’s daily comic strips were talking about postage stamps and hinting that it was time they and their kind got some recognition.

In fact, the chatter was the result of an orchestrated campaign led by "Beetle Bailey" creator Mort Walker and supported by his cartoonist colleagues. Their goal: to garner support for a stamp or stamps honoring the 100th anniversary of the first newspaper color comic "The Yellow Kid" (1895).

Walker’s efforts paid off: In 1995 the Postal Service issued a 20-stamp pane, Comic Strip Classics, followed 10 years later by the popular Peanuts stamp.
