Lincoln Cancellation Background
Jarod Sutphin based these postmark designs on the four phases of Lincoln’s life shown in the stamps. For the Rail-Splitter and Lawyer postmarks, he began by tracing the Lincoln figures from the stamp artwork.

“For the Lawyer illustration,” Jarod says, “the legs were cut off below the knee in the stamps, so I had to go in and draw them. For the Politician and President postmarks, I used photographs as a guide to draw Lincoln’s body.”

Lincoln himself – as well as the era in which he lived – served as an inspiration for some of the design. “His signature became a major element of the postmarks, as in the stamps,” Jarod explains. “And the typography was inspired by the typography of the 19th century. We wanted to create a piece that hearkened back to advertisements and broadside posters predominant during Lincoln’s life.”
