Doug West

Arroyo Seco, NM

Doug West studied art at the University of Southern California, graduating in 1970. A few years later he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he began trying to capture the vistas that surrounded him. In 1977 West created his first serigraph – a type of print made using the silk-screen process. Over the next decades he became well-known for his landscape prints, which were collected in a book, The Serigraphs of Doug West, published in 1995.

West created his last serigraph in 2009. He now specializes in oil painting and monotype printing, although his focus remains fixed on the Southwestern landscapes and skies that are his trademark.

With more than 50 solo shows to his credit, West has been exhibited nationally and internationally. His artwork is owned by the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. State Department, the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Riverside Art Museum, and the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, among others. West has created posters for Music from Angel Fire, the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra, the Vail Valley Music Festival, and the Colorado Music Festival.

West lives in Arroyo Seco, New Mexico. He often rides his mountain bike around the wild areas near his home, writing that, “I love the open vistas and solitude here, and the light and drama of ever changing skies.” The U.S. Postal Service chose one of West's existing oil paintings to feature in the 2012 stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of New Mexico statehood.
