Arnold C. Holeywell

Arnold C. Holeywell was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1923.  After serving as a topographic draftsman during World War II, Holeywell returned to New York City, where he worked as an advertising and commercial illustrator and attended Columbia University at night.

In the early 1950s, Holeywell produced cover and story illustrations for Field and Stream.  His watercolors of New England ski resorts appeared in Ford Times, the Ford Motor Company magazine.  During this same period, two of his paintings were selected by the American Watercolor Society for inclusion in their 86th annual show.

In 1963, after ten years with Western Publishing Company, Holeywell joined the Life Science Library, a new publishing venture at Time, Inc.  His design concepts changed the look of scientific illustration and garnered awards throughout the graphic arts world.  In 1967, Holeywell became assistant art director of Time-Life Books.

Mr. Holeywell died on September 9, 2010.

Among his designs for the Postal Service are two stamped cards in the Historic Preservation series: Middlebury College (2000) and Northwestern University (2001). Some of his design concepts remain in the vault at the Postal Service awaiting their possible selection as new stamps.
